"Owning our story & loving ourselves through
that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do. "
- Brene Brown
Once upon a time, in the friendly city of Port Elizabeth, on a cold winter’s night, a baby girl was born. Though Cape Town is home to me now, Port Elizabeth will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s where my earth journey begins…
Hello, I'm Sonja McKaiser, and this is my story.
Of my earliest memories involve books and stories. The one thing my parents encouraged, from a very young age, was reading. And I love books. I love stories. My mom is an amazing storyteller, and bedtime was a highlight for me because I knew my mom would tell me a story. Sometimes, when she was done reading, if I wasn’t asleep yet, she would put the book down and tell me one of her own stories. These were always my favourite.
At 6 years old, I enrolled at the Marjorie Gilbey Studio of Speech and Drama, where I was a student for 6 years. Here, I was introduced to the magical world of Roald Dahl. Fantastic Mr Fox still remains one of my all-time favourites. I completed Grade 5 in Speech and Drama through the Trinity College of London.
I loved English compositions at school, and fondly remember my standard 7 English teacher asking me to share one of my stories to the rest of the class because she enjoyed it so much. I’ve journaled since I was a teenager, and I’ve always found it cathartic; a way of sharing my feelings and voicing my thoughts. Every now and then a short story would find its way to the pages of my journals.
I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of the Western Cape in 1996, majoring in English and Linguistics. In 2001, after 6 years of running our family business, I decided to study Public Relations Management at CPUT. I worked as copywriter for a few years and although I really enjoyed the writing, my focus on PR led me to Events Management. The creativity stimulated me, but as time went by, my deep love for writing surfaced again. In 2008, I participated in an intensive creative writing course with Anne Schuster. The writing proved to be soul-enriching. It was a truly magical experience and I learnt so much from Anne.
Around the time of my 42nd birthday I made the decision to start my own business. I knew that channeling creativity would be the main component. After some soul searching, I realise that my calling is to empower others to find their stories. We are all creative beings, and I welcome you to tap into the collective creativity.
I now share my love for storytelling by facilitating expressive writing and vision board workshops. I offer a space where we, as women can collaborate and inspire each other to tell our own stories.
